The fashion world has its first Monday in May, a museum, and a staircase. We have the first Monday in June, El Segundo Rec Park, and a kitchen line freshly repainted for the occasion. Theme: SLEEVES AT THE SEAM. Interpret it or be interpreted.
The Net Gala began, as all great institutions do, as a bit that refused to die. Someone said "first Monday in June" at drill night, someone else owned a cape, and by the following spring the Rec Park had a step-and-repeat made of tournament banners and a strict door policy: no invitation but a paddle, no credential but a self-rating, signed. The ladder, it turns out, is also a guest list.
This year's theme, SLEEVES AT THE SEAM, produced the full taxonomy the desk hoped for. The literalists came sleeved to the wrist and served underhand with gravitas. The subversives came sleeveless carrying detached sleeves like opera gloves, which the fashion desk scored as "a thesis." One woman came as the seam itself — pinstriped head to toe, standing exactly on the centerline all evening, unpassable. She took home Best in Theme and both games.
The couture rules of Issue Nº 010 held under gala conditions: everything worn could split-step. The capes detached for match play — this is the innovation the actual Met has never managed, garments with a service game. And when the evening's exhibition reached 9-9, as it was always going to, the crowd in their sleeves went silent, a speed-up rose off the paint, and the reset that answered it was so soft that three separate attendees described it afterward as "the real gown."
The ode closes here, as odes should — at its loudest, in borrowed serifs, with the whole town dressed for a net. Next month the magazine goes home in Anton, plates restored to riso defaults, and the glossy quarter enters the archive. The fence will remember it. The fence remembers everything.
Chaired the Net Gala committee of one. Chose the theme, painted the kitchen line, judged Best in Theme, competed anyway, and placed second on purpose "so the trophy would circulate." Wore sleeves. Detached them at 9-9. The desk has petitioned to make her chairing permanent; she has declined annually since the bit began.
Declare her interpretation of the theme, the silhouette, and the accessory. The desk's fashion critic — feared, fair, in a visor — files the review on the spot. Rated in pickleballs, out of five.
Every gala has a cloakroom, and every cloakroom has a ledger. Ours checked forty paddles, three capes, and one rumor. Nothing was lost. Everything was noticed.
| Checked | Qty | Cloakroom note |
|---|---|---|
| Paddles | 40 | each tagged with the owner's self-rating; the ledger IS a ladder |
| Detachable capes | 3 | all reclaimed at 9-9, as designed |
| Visors | 0 | the crown does not check; see Issue Nº 010, Rule One |
| Lead tape, emergency | 1 roll | dispensed at intermission; twistweight waits for no gala |
| Rumors | 1 | re: next year's theme; the desk can neither confirm nor resist |
Verdict: a gala is judged by its cloakroom, and ours kept receipts.
The stars RSVP'd yes, arrived on theme, and judged everyone from the rope line. Find her sign. Accept her entrance.
Arrives late to the gala, on purpose, mid-conversation, and the room reorganizes around her the way a rally does. The exhibition match at 9-9 is hers before it starts. BEST IN: ENTRANCES.
Wore last year's look, unchanged, and was somehow the most on-theme woman at the net. Consistency reads as couture when the record backs it. Hers does. BEST IN: PERMANENCE.
Her sleeves arrive at the seam four inches before anyone else's, which is the theme fulfilled and also just her wingspan. The trophy committee checked the rulebook twice. BEST IN: COVERAGE, LITERAL.
Came in whatever the bin was wearing, won Best in Theme on a write-in ballot she did not organize, left before the toast. The gala's patron saint, obviously. BEST IN: MYTH.
“I was invited to the Net Gala but my only formal wear is my 2019 tournament tee. Everyone will be in capes. Do I come anyway?”— UNDERDRESSED IN EL SEGUNDO
Thas Her says: Darling, re-read the door policy: no invitation but a paddle. The 2019 tee is archival — the critic on page seven literally scores it above the capes, because vintage worn without apology is the strongest read of any theme. Come as the record of yourself. Detach nothing. Win something.
“The exhibition match at the gala went to 9-9 and the DJ cut the music for the point. Was that too much ceremony for rec pickleball?”— SOLEMN IN THE SOUTH BAY
Thas Her says: Too much? The silence was the whole thesis of the ode, itemized. The glossies borrow gravity from museums; we generate ours at 9-9, locally, in sleeves. A DJ who understands that deserves the last word of the glossy quarter, and gets it: she cut the sound, the reset died soft, and the gown — per three witnesses — was the rally. Ceremony adjourned. See you in Anton.
The reader service continues, on the record. DUPR is a number somebody's algorithm gives you; this is a number she gives herself — signed with her own key, filed to the global ladder. The interview ends where the record begins.
